Optimize Google Business Profile: 10 Steps to Better Local Visibility

Your Google Business Profile is often the first thing potential customers see — even before your website. 10 concrete steps to optimize your profile.

Why Your Google Profile Matters

1. Verify and Claim Your Profile

Without verification, you can't upload photos or reply to reviews. Go to business.google.com and claim your business. Google sends a verification code by mail, phone, or email. Tip: Check for duplicate listings — they can be merged.

2. Keep NAP Data Correct

NAP = Name, Address, Phone. Must match exactly across Google, your website, and all directories. No keyword stuffing in the name. Phone number in international format: +41 44 123 45 67.

3. Choose Primary and Secondary Categories

Category selection is one of the strongest ranking factors. Primary category = main business. Up to 9 secondary categories for supplementary services. Common mistake: Too generic — "Service company" instead of "Building cleaning".

4. Optimize Your Business Description

750 characters. What you do, where you operate, what makes you special. No links, phone numbers, or offers in the description.

5. Upload Photos and Videos

Profiles with photos get 42% more direction requests. Logo + cover image are mandatory. At least 1–2 new photos per week. No stock photos. Min 720×720 pixels.

6. Maintain Opening Hours

Wrong hours = negative reviews. Enter all Swiss public holidays and closures. Use separate hours for different services.

7. Add Services and Products

List all services with description and price. The text is indexed by Google — use natural language with relevant keywords.

8. Publish Google Posts Regularly

Short updates directly in your profile. One post per week is ideal. Each post can have a CTA button: Call, Learn more, Get quote.

9. Collect Reviews and Respond

Reviews are the most important Local Pack ranking factor. Actively ask satisfied customers for reviews. Respond to every review — positive and negative. Display your reviews on your website too — with a widget that updates automatically.

10. Use Questions & Answers (Q&A)

Proactively add and answer common customer questions. Q&A content is indexed by Google and strengthens relevance for specific searches.
