Google reviews disappeared or not showing: causes and fixes

A customer says they left a review, but nothing shows on your profile. Or ten reviews vanished overnight. Here are the causes Google itself lists, how to narrow down the problem in five steps and who can do what about it.

In short

In most cases Google has held back or removed the review because its systems suspect a policy violation such as spam. Google admits that genuine reviews are occasionally removed too. Other causes: the author deleted the review, their account was restricted, profiles were merged, or Google restricted your profile. A new review can take a few days to appear. Only the author can appeal a removal; as the owner, you contact Google support. If reviews are missing only in your dashboard but not on the public profile, it may be a display bug like the one Google confirmed in July 2026.

Is the review really gone?

First check what your customers see. Open a private browser window, search for your business on Google Maps and open the reviews. Switch the sort order from "Most relevant" to "Newest". Only if the review is missing there as well is it genuinely not visible to others. The reverse also applies: the author may still see a removed review in their own Google Maps profile. According to Google's help, it is labelled there as "Not posted", "Private" or "Not Accepted". If a customer says "It shows for me", ask whether one of these labels appears next to the review. Also note where the reviews are missing: in your Business Profile dashboard or on the public profile in Google Search and Maps. For your customers, only the public profile counts.

Why Google removes or holds back reviews

Google checks reviews automatically before they appear, and afterwards too. According to Google, the most common reason for missing reviews is a policy violation such as spam. The policies prohibit, among other things, paid reviews, reviews posted from several accounts, reviews by employees, contractors or family members (conflict of interest), off-topic content, advertising, phone numbers and links, and unusual volumes or patterns of reviews. The checks are not flawless. In its help article on reporting reviews, Google writes that its system occasionally removes legitimate reviews by mistake. Google also lists reasons that are not policy violations, such as low quality or a breach of applicable law. Google does not disclose how the filters decide in detail.

Which pattern matches your case?

Most cases can be recognised by their pattern: is a new review missing, a single older one, many at once, all of them, or are they missing only in your dashboard?

A new review does not appearCommon cause according to Google: Google is still checking it; according to the help this can take a few days. Or the filter has classed it as a violation. What you can do: Wait a few days. Don't ask the customer to post it again several times: repetitive content is a violation in itself.
A single older review is missingCommon cause according to Google: The author deleted it, or Google removed it later, for example because the author's account was restricted. What you can do: If you know the author, ask them. Only they can appeal, from their Google Maps profile.
Many reviews disappeared at onceCommon cause according to Google: Google removed reviews it considers spam, bought or a conflict of interest, including ones that had been online for a long time. What you can do: Check honestly where the reviews came from (incentive campaigns, employees, an agency). If they were genuine, contact Google support.
Reviews missing after a merge or reactivationCommon cause according to Google: After profiles are merged, Google says reviews only appear after a few days. After a reactivation, reviews are sometimes removed. What you can do: Wait a few days. If they are still missing, contact support.
Your dashboard shows no reviews, the public profile doesCommon cause according to Google: A display bug in the profile dashboard. In July 2026 Google confirmed such a bug: the reviews stayed visible in Search and Maps. What you can do: Check the public profile and take screenshots. As long as the reviews are visible there, wait and don't report or change anything.
No new reviews possible, warning on the profileCommon cause according to Google: Google has restricted the profile for a policy violation, for example after fake reviews. The owner is notified by email. What you can do: Fix the cause, then request a new review of the profile via Google's form.
Your website widget shows fewer reviews than GoogleCommon cause according to Google: Widgets that load via the Google Places API receive at most five review texts, sorted by relevance. What you can do: This is normal. The overall rating and review count still come directly from Google.

Who can appeal

The author. Whoever wrote the review can see in their Google Maps profile whether it was removed. For certain types of violation they can appeal there, once and up to a year after the removal. If they edit or delete the review during the process, the appeal is cancelled. You as the owner. In its help article on missing reviews, Google writes that reviews removed for policy violations are not restored. One exception is large-scale erroneous removals like in July 2026, when Google announced it would restore reviews removed by mistake. If genuine reviews were removed as spam by mistake, your option is to contact Business Profile support. There is no guarantee the reviews will come back. The Reviews Management Tool does not help in this case. It is designed for the opposite situation: you report a review that breaks the rules, track its status and can appeal once if Google leaves it up. How that works is explained in the guide Deleting a Google review.

Outage or real removal? Two cases from July 2026

Two incidents in a single week showed how different "reviews gone" can be. 3 July 2026: reviews actually removed. Many profiles lost reviews, some thousands, often after receiving fake reviews. Google told Search Engine Roundtable that when its systems detect suspicious reviews, it takes actions including removing reviews and temporarily pausing reviews on the profile. Google said it was investigating and would restore any reviews removed incorrectly. Google Product Expert Amy Toman later relayed that, according to Google, the issue had been resolved. 9 July 2026: only a display bug. In the Business Profile dashboard, many owners were told they had no reviews yet, while the public profile showed all of them. On 15 July Google confirmed the bug: the reviews remained published and visible in Search and Maps and would reappear in the dashboard over the following days. For you this means: always check the public profile first. When a problem affects many businesses at once, the Business Profile help forum and trade media such as Search Engine Roundtable usually report it within hours. Waiting while taking screenshots is then the best response.

What to avoid

Don't ask customers to repost a vanished review several times or to post it from a second account. Both fall under the rules on repetitive content and posting from multiple accounts. Don't replace lost reviews with bought ones or with reviews from employees and family. Google classes exactly this as fake engagement or a conflict of interest and can restrict the profile. More in the guide Buying Google reviews. And don't accuse customers or competitors in a public reply. A calm, factual reply to the remaining reviews makes a better impression. Templates are in Responding to Google reviews.

Special case Germany: notice about removed reviews

Since 2026, Google has shown a notice on profiles in Germany when reviews were removed following defamation complaints under German law, as a range such as "11 to 20 reviews". The period covered is 365 days. Google has not documented such a notice for Switzerland. For Swiss businesses with customers in Germany it is still worth knowing: having reviews removed there through legal channels becomes visible on the profile.

Find the cause in five steps

Here is how to proceed when one or more Google reviews are missing.

  1. 1

    Check as a customer

Open a private browser window, look up the business in Google Search and on Google Maps and sort the reviews by "Newest". If the review is missing on both, it is not visible to others. If you manage several profiles, check the others too.

  2. 2

    Record what is missing

Note the review count and overall rating, plus the date and name of the missing reviews. Take screenshots with date and time, of both the dashboard and the public profile. Without this information, support can hardly help you.

  3. 3

    Identify the pattern

Match the case to the table above. Check the Business Profile help forum to see whether many businesses report the same thing; if so, it is probably an outage. Also check your inbox for a message from Google about your profile.

  4. 4

    Choose the right route

New review: wait a few days. Single review: point the author to the appeal in their Maps profile. Several genuine reviews gone or profile restricted: contact support or request a new review of the profile.

  5. 5

    Contact support and keep records

You reach support while signed in via the Business Profile help (contact link). State the date, number and names and attach the screenshots. Keep the case number and the reply.

Google changes buttons and menus regularly. The linked version of Google's help, checked on 19 October 2026, is authoritative.

How to keep genuine reviews online

No filter mistake can be ruled out completely. These five points keep your reviews clearly within the rules Google publishes.

  1. 1.Ask every customer, without incentives. Discounts, vouchers or prize draws in exchange for reviews break Google's fake engagement policy.
  2. 2.No reviews from your own circle. Employees, contractors and family members do not leave reviews. Google treats this as a conflict of interest.
  3. 3.Ask steadily. Ask after every job rather than in a single campaign. Google explicitly names unusual volumes or patterns as a violation.
  4. 4.Use the direct review link. With the link from your profile, customers land straight in the right form. Guide: Creating a Google review link.
  5. 5.Point customers to up-to-date apps. According to Google, customers with old smartphones or outdated apps may not be able to post their review.

What your website widget shows when reviews disappear

Many owners notice missing reviews on their own website first. This is how SwissTrustWidget behaves, as of October 2026:

  • Overall rating and review count: the widget takes them unchanged, exactly as Google supplies them. It does not calculate anything itself.
  • Review texts: via the Places API, Google supplies at most five reviews, sorted by relevance. The widget shows this selection; visitors can see all reviews via the link to Google.
  • Updates: the widget fetches the data again after just over six hours at the latest. A removed review then disappears from your website too.
  • Profile unavailable: if Google can no longer find the profile or marks it as closed, the widget shows a notice instead of outdated figures.

A screenshot or copied-out reviews, on the other hand, stay up even when they have long since gone from Google. Which methods update themselves is compared in the guide Embedding Google reviews on your website.

Summary

Missing Google reviews almost always have one of a few causes: Google is still checking, the filter suspected a violation, the author deleted the review, profiles were merged or the profile is restricted. Check in a private window first, record what is missing and identify the pattern. Only the author can bring back a removed review through an appeal; as the owner, you contact support. Prevention works best: ask every customer, steadily and without incentives. That way reviews grow continuously and a single loss barely matters. The guide Getting more Google reviews shows how.
